What Are The Different Grades Of Steel?

March 14, 2024 0 Comments stainless-steel

Steel is a basic material used widely in modern manufacturing and construction projects.Stainless steel product manufacturers like Viraj Profiles are manufacturing stainless steel products in different grades. Each of these fulfills the needs and distinct demands of a particular application. To select the right kind of grade to ensure the success of residential, commercial, and industrial projects, engineers, architects, and manufacturers must have a thorough knowledge of the various grades of stainless steel and select the right one for lasting projects. In this blog, we’ll learn more about different stainless steel grades that are suitable for distinct project applications.

Carbon Steel

Carbon steel is made of iron and carbon. It is the most widely used form of steel. The carbon content of this is between 0.05% and 2.0%. Depending on the percentage of carbon content, it is available in three forms. Low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel. It is the percentage of carbon that determines properties and applications.

Low-carbon steel is highly ductile, very easy to machine, and can be successfully used to fabricate equipment, automobile parts, and various other structural applications.

On the other hand, medium-carbon steel has higher strength and hardness due to its higher carbon content and is hence used in heavy construction equipment, shafts, gears, etc.

With the highest percentage of carbon content, high-carbon steel is well known for its remarkable hardness and resistance to wear. It is frequently used in the fabrication of high-strength wires, springs, and cutting instruments, etc.

Alloy Steel

Alloy steel is produced by adding a few other elements, like manganese, nickel, chromium, or molybdenum, to carbon steel. It is much stronger, harder, and highly resistant to corrosion than different forms of carbon steel. Being an improved version, it is extensively used to ensure the success of projects requiring high strength-to-weight ratios, like structural reinforcements, automotive parts, and in the aerospace industry to fabricate various components.

Stainless steel

Stainless steels contain 10–20% chromium as a major element, in addition to other elements such as nickel, silicon, manganese, and carbon. Stainless steel is highly corrosion-resistant and an extremely safe solution to use in both inside and outside projects. These are highly recommended for exterior use as they are incredibly strong and can withstand adverse climatic conditions. These are also widely used to fabricate electrical equipment and various machines. Stainless steel is available in different grades depending on its composition. Grade 304 Stainless steel is very strong and durable, and it is used in the construction industry.

Tool Steels

Another kind of steel is tool steel. As depicted by the name, this grade of steel is excellent for manufacturing various tools and can be put to heavy-duty usage. It is the result of combining tungsten, molybdenum, cobalt, and vanadium. These add heat resistance and durability to the steel.
